A design for The Beggars' Opera Burlesqued 1728
Pen and ink, brown and grey wash | 20.2 x 25.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 913486
-
A pen and ink drawing of a theatre scene, with characters on a raised platform with animals' heads. A group of musicians and the crowd below, with audiences also looking on from boxes behind. Red chalk stains at the edges, probably from chalking for transfer on the verso. The outlines of the design incised.
The drawing is a design for a print entitled The Beggars' Opera Burlesqued, published in 1728. The print satirises John Gay's Beggar's Opera, which opened in 1728. The print was previously attributed to William Hogarth, but is no longer believed to be by him.Provenance
