A pen and ink drawing showing a male figure carrying a large pile of chamber pots on his head entering a doorway on the right. Behind him is a liveried servant carrying a sedan chair. Gathered around are soldiers trying to keep the crowd in order. Inscribed below in the hand of Samuel Ireland, 'Jack in an Office or Peter Necessary with choice of Chamber Pots. A Ticket for the — 6d'. With a collector's stamp (leaf?) also found on RCIN 913480 and on prints by Hogarth in the Royal Collection.
On 1 April 1786 a print by Samuel Ireland with the same title and in the same direction as this drawing was published by W. Dickinson (see British Museum, Cc,1.262 for an impression). Ireland believed the print to be by Hogarth, although that attribution is now uncertain. The authorship of this drawing is also unclear; it may have been made by Samuel Ireland himself in preparation for the print, and it was described as a 'tracing' by Ireland in Nichols' Anecdotes of William Hogarth, 1833, p. 307. There is some similarity in style with a drawing attributed to Joseph Haynes, also made for Ireland (RCIN 913480).
Samuel Ireland was a keen collector of Hogarth drawings and prints, and many of those in the Royal Collection were acquired from his collection.Provenance
Samuel Ireland; probably acquired by George IV; Royal Collection by 1833
