A sheet of studies of a man with a wooden leg c. 1750-70
-
A pencil, pen and ink and grey wash drawing of a male figure wearing a hat and with a wooden leg, seated on a bench in seven different positions. A young man standing; a profile in pencil on another scale. A further figure almost erased. Several heavy grey smudges of wash on both sides of the sheet. With the stamps of Lugt 2852 (?Ercoli Lelli) and Jonathan Richardson the Younger (Lugt 2170), and inscribed with the lot number 917 (Standly sale). Lion watermark, similar to Heawood 3152.
The stamp Lugt 2852 has been tentatively associated with Ercoli Lelli (1702-1766), who was based in Bologna, but it seems unlikely that this evidently northern or British drawing can have been in Bologna before 1766. The watermark suggests an English or Dutch paper of the mid-eighteenth century. It also seems unlikely that the drawing can be by Hogarth. A. P. Oppé expressed doubts over the attribution in his catalogue raisonné of Hogarth's drawings published in 1948. He described the subject as showing a Chelsea Pensioner, but the subject could be any male figure observed in various positions.Provenance
?Ercoli Lelli, Bologna (Lugt 2852); Jonathan Richardson the Younger (Lugt 2170); Henry Peter Standly, his sale 1845, lot 917, bought Colnaghi £2 2s; acquired by Queen Victoria
