William Hogarth (1697-1764)
A vignette for the frontispiece of the 'The Analysis of Beauty' c. 1753
-
A red chalk drawing of a pyramid, with a ring at its apex and a serpentine line tied with a bow through the centre. Inscribed below in pen and ink, 'Sketch of a New coinage by Hogarth 1762', and below, 'Frontispiece to ye Analysis - given to me by Mrs Hogarth. Saml. Ireland'. Incised with stylus and ruler. Pro Patria watermark.
The drawing is a study for the engraving on the titlepage of Hogarth's Analysis of Beauty, published in 1753, and shows his famous 'line of beauty' or 'serpentine line'. The drawing differs in several details from the final frontispiece, with a shaded side and a ring at the apex. The serpentine line is also slightly different in the plate, as it has a snake head and is no longer suspended by a bow. It is also placed on a plinth labelled 'Variety'.
The inscriptions on the drawing are in the hand of Samuel Ireland, although the note about the 'new coinage' is not related to this drawing. The drawing also does not appear to have been in the Samuel Ireland sales, at which several Hogarth drawings were acquired for the Royal Collection.Provenance
Samuel Ireland; probably acquired by George IV; Royal Collection by 1833 [mentioned in Nichols, Anecdotes, 1833]
