Inscribed on the verso 'This Drawing was given me by / my [...]; It is / by Gainsborough, and was purchased / at his sale, at Mr Christie's April 10 1797 / John Thomas Smith,  / Engraver of the Antiquities / London and Its Environs / It is drawn in a very singular manner, as will / appear when held up to the light'. Nothing is now visible when the drawing is held to the light: A. P.
