-
A watercolour drawing of a crowded scene in Covent Garden during the election of 1784. The three candidates, Charles James Fox, Rear Admiral Lord Hood and Cecil James Wray, are addressing the crowd from a podium on the steps of St Paul's, Covent Garden. Signed: R. Dighton del.
The drawing depicts a riotous hustings that took place in Covent Garden on 1 April during the election campaign of 1784, in which Fox, Wray and Hood all stood for election in the closely-contested seat of the City of Westminster. A large crowd gathered in the square bearing flags and banners in support of all three candidates. The three men took to the stage to deliver speeches in a febrile atmosphere, and the hustings was followed by several weeks of violence and disorder by supporters of all three candidates that was closely followed by the national press. Although George III supported Wray and Hood, George, Prince of Wales supported the Whig candidate Fox. The election was eventually won by Hood.
Robert Dighton made several drawings of election scenes in Covent Garden, those that took place in 1788 (see a print after this drawing in the British Museum) and 1796 (the drawing was with Spink in 1948 and an etching is in the Royal Library).Provenance
