William Collingwood (1819-1903)
The Jungfrau at evening dated 1887
-
A watercolour view of a mountainous landscape with snow-capped peaks, mist below in the valley and two figures in left foreground. Signed and dated at bottom right.
Collingwood was a painter of landscapes and architectural subjects who studied with Samuel Prout and J.D. Harding. John Ruskin praised an alpine subject by the artist shown at an exhibition in 1856, and thereafter Collingwood specialised in such scenes. This work was given by Collingwood as part of the Royal Watercolour Society's Golden Jubilee Gift to Queen Victoria in 1887. -
