A watercolour depicting a sailor with his two children beside the new snow-covered grave of his wife. Signed and dated "E Buckman / 87". Buckman was a genre painter and engraver who, according to 'Who Was Who', "directed the art studies" of the Princess of Wales (later Queen Alexandra) and her daughters. A drawing lesson with 'Mr Buckman' is recorded in the engagement diary of Princess Alexandra for 12 March 1883.
