A drawing of a rocky landscape with trees. A rider and a shepherd with his herd are crossing a bridge in the middleground, left. In the background is a wooded hill surmounted by a building. Inscribed, lower right by the artist: fuori di Genoa / quarto. The inscription probably identifies the locality as Quarto di Mille, outside Genoa. Van Dyck stayed in Genoa on several occasions during his Italian journey between 1621 and 1627.
