Charles II c.1676
Red chalk (offset and worked up) | 55.6 x 40.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 912839
-
A red chalk drawing of Charles, II, shown head and shoulders, turned to the right, facing the spectator. This is a red chalk offset which has been worked up in the area of the face in red chalk. It has been squared for transfer. The drawing appears to be related to the production of a mezzotint of the sitter by Abraham Blooteling. Leo Van Puyvelde attributed the drawing to Vanderbank on basis of an engraving by Vanderbank based on this drawing, although an impression of this engraving is not currently known. George IV acquired the drawing when Prince of Wales as a work by Adrian van der Werff.
Provenance
Purchased by George IV when Prince of Wales from Colnaghi & Co. on 26 March 1805 for £5 5s, as 'a Drawing the Port of Charles 2d by Vanderwerf' (Royal Archives GEO/MAIN/27297)
