Two studies of a helmet with a face-shaped visor c.1485-90
Pen and ink | 6.0 x 10.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 912590

Two sketches of a man's head turned in profile to the right, wearing a helmet with raised visor, similar to that in RL 12588.
This fragment was cut (probably by Francesco Melzi) from larger sheets of studies by Leonardo. The helmet is a metal parade piece with hinged visor, rather than an ephemeral costume. Milan was a centre for the production of armour, and it is possible that Leonardo was simply jotting down a form that he had seen in use, rather than working on a design.
