-
A study of St Jerome, naked, kneeling on his left knee, facing to the left with his head almost in profile to the left, and his body turned away from the spectator. In his left hand is a crucifix, and his right arm is stretched out behind him.
The pose is exactly that of Leonardo’s unfinished painting of St Jerome, but seen from behind. The drawing was presumably made from a small figure in clay or wax, modelled by Leonardo to help him compose the painting, and then available for other artists to use in his collaborative Milanese workshop.
On the verso is William Gibson's inscription: Leonardo da Vinci .5.3. This drawing was therefore not part of the Leoni album that contained the Leonardo drawings now in the Royal Collection, but entered the Royal Collection through a different route.Provenance
From the collection of William Gibson; probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III’s Inventory A, p. 123, ‘Coreggio Parmegiano &ca.’, no. 36, ‘a naked figure on a blueish paper. By Leonardo da Vinci. {in pencil: transferred to Vol 1 of Leonardo's Drawings}’
