A fragment, with two sketches of grotesque heads. To the left, the head of an elderly man, profile right, of the usual toothless type with a squashed-in nose. To the right, on a smaller scale, a face with a long hooked nose and a receding chin, profile left. Despite its modest size, this sketch is one of the clearest examples of contrasting profiles in the whole of Leonardo's oeuvre.
The fragment was probably cut by Francesco Melzi from the larger sheet now Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Codex Atlanticus, folio 102 recto-a.
Provenance
Bequeathed to Francesco Melzi; from whose heirs purchased by Pompeo Leoni, c.1582-90; Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, by 1630; Probably acquired by Charles II; Royal Collection by 1690
