A fragment with a sketch of the head and shoulders of a man, profile right, with a double chin and hair blown forward.
The fragment was cut, probably by Francesco Melzi, from a sheet in the Codex Atlanticus (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana; fol. 252v-a) that mainly studies methods of surveying mountains. The bust was drawn over a sketch of two peaks, and a straight line between their summits passes through the nape of the man's neck. The numbers on the right are fragments of calculations on the parent sheet.
Verso: a fragment of a diagram of machinery, and the word 'qual'.
Provenance
Bequeathed to Francesco Melzi; from whose heirs purchased by Pompeo Leoni, c.1582-90; Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, by 1630; Probably acquired by Charles II; Royal Collection by 1690
