Pen and ink | 2.8 x 3.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 912345
-
A small sketch of a horse walking in profile to the left. This is a study for the equestrian monument to Francesco Sforza, which Leonardo 'recommenced' in 1490, with the horse in a walking pose, as here, rather than rearing. The drawing is a fragment, cut, probably by Francesco Melzi, from the Codex Atlanticus (fol. 147 recto-b); RCIN 912472 was also cut from the same parent sheet.
On the verso of the drawing are irregular horizontal curving lines, seen from the parent sheet to be part of the hair and bust of a young woman in profile.Provenance
Bequeathed to Francesco Melzi; from whose heirs purchased by Pompeo Leoni, c.1582-90; Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, by 1630; Probably acquired by Charles II; Royal Collection by 1690
