A portrait drawing of an unidentified man on pink prepared paper. He is shown half length and wears a black jacket and cloak and a black hat. The drawing is executed mainly in coloured chalks, wtih strokes of pen and ink to define the sitter's features and a touch of blue watercolour in the eyes. There is a brief pattern in red chalk at the top of the sheet, the purpose of which has not been identified.
A painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. 49.7.23) may be based on this drawing. It bears an inscription with the date 1535 and the sitter's age: 28. On the basis of this, it was suggested by M Gray (in Hackney History, VI, 2000) that the sitter may be Sir Ralph Sadler, a secretary to Thomas Cromwell who in 1535 was appointed Clerk of the Hanaper of Chancery in the year the portrait was made.Provenance
