A portrait drawing of Sir Thomas More (1478-1535). He is shown bust length, facing facing three-quarters to the right and wearing a hat and fur collar. The drawing is largely in black and coloured chalks, with wash modelling in the face and hat. The contours of the drawing have been traced with a stylus for transfer to another sheet or prepared panel.
Inscribed in a sixteenth-century hand at upper centre: Sier Thomas Mooer.
This is a study for the group portrait of the More family painted by Holbein shortly after his arrival in England in 1526. In preparation for the painting, Holbein made individual chalk studies of the sitters, of which seven survive, all in the Royal Collection. This sheet appears different from the rest of hte set, but is on the same paper as the others from the group - it may represent a different stage in Holbein's working process. An early inscription at top centre indicates that this sheet has a separate early history from the majority of the drawings, and it probably joined the group of Holbein drawings in the Royal Collection in the second half of the sixteenth century or later.Provenance
