A portrait drawing of Mary, Duchess of Richmond and Somerset (c.1519-55?) on pink prepared paper. The drawing is unfinished, and shows the sitter facing the front, wearing a black hat with a feather. At the bottom of the sheet are studies of the decoration of the sitter's hat, which is scattered with 'M's and 'R's. The drawing is largely in black and coloured chalks, with black ink applied with a brush to depict the hat and feather.
The drawing is inscribed with colour and textile notes in Holbein's hand: on the sitter's dress he has written samet rot (red velvet) and schwarz felbet (black velvet). An eighteenth-century inscription (a copy of a mid-sixteenth-century original) at top left identifies the sitter as 'The Lady of Richmond.'.
Mary Howard was the daughter of Thomas, 3rd Duke of Norfolk and sister of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. She was married to Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset, the illegitimate son of Henry VIII, who died on 23 July 1536. She was a committed Protestant, who supported reforming preachers in East Anglia, and one of the compilers of the Devonshire Manuscript of poetry (British Library Add MS 17492).Provenance
