The Victory of Alexander over Porus c. 1630-50
Pen and brown wash on six pieces of paper | 85.2 x 158.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 912064
-
A drawing of a confused battle scene with Alexander in the centre, charging on a horse, and Porus on the right, fleeing on his elephant. The Battle of the Hydaspes River, fought between the Macedonians and the Indian army of King Porus, took place in 326 BC.
This unusually large and finished drawing was presumably made as a preparation for a big battle-piece similar to the Victory of Alexander over Darius, which Cortona executed for the Sachetti c. 1635, and may have been planned as a pair to it.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani
