A large and carefully finished drawing, agreeing in all details, for Poussin's large altarpiece of 1641, commissioned by Louis XIII in 1640 for a chapel in the chateau of St Germain-en-Laye (now in the Louvre). Probably by Jean Lemaire, Poussin's principal assistant in Paris.
Provenance
Probably Cassiano dal Pozzo (1583-1657); from whose heirs bought by Pope Clement XI, 1703; passed to his nephew, Cardinal Alessandro Albani, 1714; from whom acquired by George III, 1762.
