The Fountain of Neptune, Piazza Navona, Rome c.1653-5
Pen and brown wash, on brown paper | 29.6 x 39.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 910758
-
A design for a fountain probably intended for the northern end of the Piazza Navona, Rome: the gesticulating figure of Neptune stands astride a large oyster shell, whilst in the basin below tritons blow their shells and pairs of dolphins spout water into an outer basin.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; it is likely that this was first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 114: 'Designs of Fountains in different parts near and at Rome')
