A wash drawing of a view of the villa, viewed from the garden, looking towards the road. One of a series of views of Consul Smith's villa at Moggiano: RCIN 907698-907705.
The manuscript list at the beginning of the volume from which this drawing was removed only mentions six such sketches (see RCIN 970137.b.) This is probably a mistake, since all eight drawings clearly represent the same villa and form a single series. The villa, which is an architecturally unpretentious building, was, like Smith's palace in Venice, designed by him and Visentini.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
