A bridge over a canal c. 1730-50
Black chalk, pen and grey wash | 21.0 x 14.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 907661
-
A drawing of a low bridge over a canal. The bridge, centre, is surmounted by a classical statue. On the right is a wooden gate giving access to steps down to the water.
RCIN 907658-907661, 907664, 907665, 907668, 907669, 907672, 907673 are capricci characteristically Venetian in conception, but their technique is closer to that of Giovanni Paolo Panini. RCIN 907659 and 907664 are almost identical with two paintings which were attributed in the twentieth century to Panini and then to Canaletto. They are probably both by Marco Ricci, and are now in the Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, New York. The composition of RCIN 907659 is repeated, with variations, in a small painting ascribed to Francesco Guardi in the Beurdeley sale (Petit, Paris, 6 May 1920, lot 157).Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
