Antonio Visentini (Venice 1688- Venice 1782)
Vignette depicting the Isola di S. Giorgio in Alga published 1738
-
A design for a vignette for Della Istoria d'Italia di M. Francesco Guicciardini Libri XX published by Giambattista Pasquali in 1738: within an ornate rectangular fictive frame, fishing vessels and a gondola on the water pass before the Church of S. Giorgio.
One of twenty vignettes (RCIN 907594-907613) which were also published separately in 1777 by Teodoro Viero under the title Isolario Veneto. They were also frequently used by Guardi or members of his studio as models for their small vedute, as for instance, in a series of twelve in the museum of Budapest, now attributed by R Pallucchini to Giacomo Guardi. A drawing showing a view almost identical with RCIN 907608, and with similar boats and figures, was sold as a Canaletto by de Vries, Amsterdam, 27 March 1923 (lot 129). Two others in the Uffizi, attributed to Canaletto, show views from exactly the same point as RCIN 907600, and 907612.Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
