A drawing of an invented view, known as a capricco. The drawing features architectural elements from the church of Santi Maria e Donato on the island of Murano. On the left, the church's distinctive bell tower can be seen and on the right the part of the church itself. Several figures populate the piazza in front of these buildings. The scene is enclosed within a ruled ink border line.
The drawing is a variant of another similar capriccio (RL 7492). Canaletto depicted the belltower of the church more accurately than before, heightening the clock-storey and adding another arcaded storey above. But he completely transformed the church, retaining only the arcaded apse and changing all the details into the language of Venetian gothic, such that without the belltower the church would not be identifiable. A circular tempietto now stands in the enlarged space beyond the church. The mannered pen-work indicates that this is a late work, probably executed many years after the original pen drawing.
