The head of a man in a cowl, profile left. The drawing comes from Consul Smith's album of caricatures, where it was placed with several drawings of the school of Guercino; A.E. Popham (note on mount) suggested ‘Liaño (Liagno)’, ie. Felipe de Liaño / Teodoro Filippo di Liagno / Filippino Napoletano. The drawing was catalogued by Blunt (in B(M)) among the anonymous Bolognese; C. Loisel Legrand suggested (note on mount) an attribution to Ribera, and this was confirmed by G. Finaldi (verbally, 2022).
Provenance
From Consul Jospeh Smith's album of caricatures; acquired by George III in 1762.
