Antonio Visentini (Venice 1688- Venice 1782)
The title to a volume of Sebastiano Ricci's drawings c. 1730-50
-
The titlepage to a volume of Sebastiano Ricci's drawings: featuring the coat of arms of Consul Joseph Smith within a decorative border. Signed at the bottom: AV. F. See also RCIN 970114.
Visentini was employed by Consul Smith to paint titlepages for the folios in which he bound up his drawings. Six of these volumes survive with their titles; the others have been broken up for mounting and the titlepages have disappeared, except that from the Canaletto volume. It is likely that similar titlepages existed in Smith's volumes of Marco Ricci and Piazzetta drawings, and perhaps in the Carracci and Castiglione folios.Provenance
Commissioned by Joseph Smith; probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice
