St Matthew and the angel and a copy after one of Raphael's prophets in Santa Maria della Pace c.1586
Pen and ink and red chalk | 23.3 x 17.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 906969

Two studies of St Matthew and the angel together, seven studies of the single figure of St Matthew and one copy of the prophet Isiah by Raphael.
On this sheet Figino plays around with different relationships between the St Matthew and the angel in preparation for his painting of the same subject-matter for the Chiesa San Raffaele in Milan. On the top left he drew a copy of Raphael’s Isaiah in Santa Maria della Pace in Rome which perhaps served Figino as starting point for his own composition. For other preparatory studies for St Matthew and the angel see RCINs 906937, 906965, 906968, 906970 and 906974 and inv.no.1514r at the Accademia in Venice.
