Recto: Five studies of rearing horses, one with a rider, another one just lifting a foreleg, a lioness, a man running, and a pair of horses copulating. Verso: Two studies for an equestrian portrait for a gentleman in armour, two of rearing or galloping horse.
The rearing horse seen in profile on the top edge of the recto was reused on the verso, but this time carrying a rider. The other studies that show horses from the front or at a slight angle were probably preparatory for the composition of Murcius Scaevola. For further studies of this subject by Figino in the Royal Collection see 906954, 906962, and 906964.
The shape of Figino's horses, particularly the line of the head and the swelling form of the neck, seems to be quite close to the horses drawn at the Spanish court and in Flemish paintings at the same time. But Figino clearly took some inspiration for his horses from Leonardo da Vinci: the thin snout with dilated lips, arched neck, powerful, raised pose on the front and nerve in the legs. For other studies of horses by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906949v, 906964, 906965rv, 906971v and 906974rv, inv.nos. 1514r, 1517rv, 1516rv,1515v in the Accademia in Venice and inv.nos. 0700, 0701 and 0702 in Christ Church, Oxford.
