Giovanni Ambrogio Figino (1548/51-1608)
Warriors on horseback c.1580-90
-
Three studies of warriors and one of a man wearing a helmet in profile.
The three studies of a warrior in Roman armour on a rearing or galloping horse might show the legendary Roman soldier Murcius Scaevola. Other studies for this composition by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906954, 906963v and 906964.
The drawing of a man in profile wearing an antique helmet is perhaps a more detailed and worked up study of the rider above. On the verso a study of another rider is visible study of man with helmet in profile, maybe for the same composition.
Inscribed in pen at lower left: No 91
