Recto: A study for the Virgin and infant Christ with St John the Baptist together with a sketch of the Virgin's face. Verso: A study of the penitent Magdalene in penitence and a male nude walking.
On the recto St John is kneeling in next to the Madonna and Child, presenting them with the winged face of a cherub, while Christ reaches out to bless him. There is some indication that the composition has been framed. For other compositions for the same composition by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906942v, 906957, 906960 v and 906961v.
On the verso the figure of Mary Magdalene is shown in penitence, contemplating a skull in her right hand. In the left hand, resting on her knee she is holding a vessel. Figino composed the body structures first and draped the figure afterwards. The drawing style of the Virgin and May Magdalen is very similar to RCIN 906940. For other studies for her by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906940 and 906948.
Inscribed in pen at lower right: No 87
