Giovanni Ambrogio Figino (1548/51-1608)
The Virgin Mary with the infant Christ and infant St John the Baptist c.1580-90
-
A study for a composition of the Virgin and child with the infant St John.
The Virgin Mary is holding the infant Christ on her lap. Christ reaches out to the infant St John the Baptist who is kneeling besides her. Figino used three different media in this drawing. The legs of the Virgin were constructed using black chalk, whereas he used red chalk for the rest of the figures, finishing them off by using pen and ink for working up the details and the background. The rectangular framing around the figures indicates that Figino might have planned a painting using this composition
For other studies for this composition by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906942v, 906958r, 906960 v and 906961v.
