Giovanni Ambrogio Figino (1548/51-1608)
The Madonna and Child trampling the serpent, and various studies c.1580
-
Twelve studies of the Madonna and Child trampling on a serpent/dragon, and a number of studies for sleeping apostles for the Agony in the Garden, of single dragons, one of a foot, of a woman wearing a cloak, and of a male nude reaching out.
Various studies for Figino's painting of Madonna and Child trampling the serpent have been crowded over the lower half of the page serving a preparatory purpose for his painting of the same subject-matter, installed in the church of Sant’Antonio Abate in Milan in the early 1580s.
On this sheet Figino tested different alignments of mother and child and the snake (which rather looks like a dragon). The compositions at the left edge of the sheet are very close to the finished painting, in which the dragon was reduced to a snake. In the bottom left Figino made a sketch of Parmigianino’s Vision of St Jerome, slightly altering the position of Virgin and Child from that in the original painting. It may be that Figino used Parmigianino's work as inspiration for his own interpretation of the subject.
Arranged in a circle in the middle of the sheet are several studies of sleeping apostles, probably preparatory for Figino's painting of Agony in the Garden in Santa Maria della Passione in Milan. Their contours are drawn with a thinner pen compared to the studies of the compositions with the Madonna.
Inscribed in pen at lower left: No 85; and at lower right: Michel Anglo
