Giovanni Ambrogio Figino (1548/51-1608)
The Baptism of Christ c.1580-1600
-
Three complete studies of the Baptism of Christ, and several individual studies of St John and Christ, and one of a three-quarter-length figure for a different composition.
The drawings on this sheet are structured in three registers. In the top left corner Figino made a study for a seated male figure – probably a study for St Matthew. Followed by studies of the standing Christ, his head bent down and hands folded before his chest. In the top right corner an unrelated half-length study of a male figure turned in three-quarter view holding a helmet in his left and a stick or sword in his right.
Below three complete studies of St John baptizing Christ, with different positions of Christ ranging from kneeling on a rock, over kneeling turned to the figure of St John, or standing in the river and St John slightly higher up. The study on the right hand side has been frame, indicating a final stage of the composition, at least on this sheet.
Interestingly, none of the individual studies of the figure of Christ of various sizes on the bottom of the sheet relates directly to the framed study. Further three studies for Christ's head only, finished to different degrees, can be found scattered between the studies of full figures for Christ.
For other studies for the Baptism of Christ by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCIN 906970.
