Recto: A study of a man on horseback with a spear preceded by a man with a torch, one of the Vestal Virgin Tuccia kneeling in front of an outline of a city, one of Neptune, and of six male figures, two of them holding a trident and one of a seated woman. Verso: Three studies of the Vestal Virgin Tuccia, one of Psyche awakening Cupid, one of a man with a torch, two of running figures, one of a figure lying on the ground and three unidentifiable studies.
The two figures at the top on the recto seem to be individual studies, whereas the figures below are arranged in pairs and might be studies for Neptune rescues Amymone or Neptune surprises Caenis. For other studies of Neptune by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906939v, 906945, 906949vr and 906952 and for further studies of the Vestal Tuccia see RCINs 906935, 906942r, 906955r, 906960 and 906966.
A study of a man on horseback with a spear preceded by a man with a torch and being attacked by a man with a lance from behind are arranged on an outline of a hill indicating that they belong to the same composition. For other studies of mounted horsemen by Figino in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906954, 906962, 906963 and 906954 and for Venus and Cupid see RCINs 906960 and 906961.
