Giovanni Ambrogio Figino (1548/51-1608)
Studies for the Flagellation and other compositions c.1580-90
-
Four studies of a male nude flagellating, standing male nude pointing to the right and a larger study of the upper part of this figure, and the upper part of a man leaning on his right arm and other slight sketches.
On this sheet Figino made individual studies of the executioners of a Flagellation, perhaps in preparation for a painting that did not survive. The nude man in profile to the right in the act of scourging corresponds with one of the executioners in the Scourging of Christ in the Prado by some follower of Michelangelo ( ill. Mitteilungen des Kunsthistorischen Instituts in Florenz, IV 1932, p. 45). For further studies by Figino that relate to a Flagellation in the Royal Collection see RCINs 906892, 906941r, 906971v, 906972 and 906987r.
Inscribed in pen at lower left: No 22
