Bocchus delivering Jugurtha to the Roman Quaestor Sulla c.1568-78
-
A drawing of Roman soldiers gathered in front of tents: the Roman quaestor Lucius Sulla is seated on a throne on the left. He dismisses King Jugurtha, a prisoner, who is led off by soldiers to the right. In the background is an encampment with activities of army life. The scene is surrounded by a decorative border with naval trophies and above, an empty cartouche as in RCIN 906853. Inscribed within the upper border: Boccus Mauritanie Rex Lucio Sylle Questori Iugutam numidie Regem Victum Tradit. With RCIN 906865, 906868, this is probably a design for a series of tapestries illustrating the history of Rome.
Provenance
First recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p.126: '16. Eight of the Twelve Months of the Year. The Triumph of Spring and Winter, and six of Military Engagements, design'd for Tapestry's')
