A drawing of a cavalry charge, in a hilly landscape, which routs an army fleeing to the right. Surrounding the scene are decorative borders with military trophies, and above, an empty cartouche from which hangs the collar of an unidentified Order. Inscribed within the upper border: Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus, victo Antiocho Rege Syriae, pacem dedit: vorrei che meglio se mostrasse la falange, arabica, di carri soprafacti et catafracti, per che mi pare che proprie mostri quasi niente. With RCIN 906864 and 906866, this is proably a design for a series of tapestries.
Provenance
First recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p.126: '16. Eight of the Twelve Months of the Year. The Triumph of Spring and Winter, and six of Military Engagements, design'd for Tapestry's')
