A drawing showing Janus standing before a ship, holding a large key and the rudder of a ship. Behind, to the left, is a village before a hill, and above, in the clouds, the Water-Bearer (Aquarius) pouring water from two urns. The decorative border includes a bare tree trunk on the left, with genie making fire, and on the right the mast of a ship and marine tackle. Above is an empty cartouche from which hangs the collar of the order of St Michael. Inscribed within the upper border: Ianus bifrons annum praecedentem claudit: & sequentem aperit, strenis amicitias renouans. This is a design for one of a series of tapestries (RCIN 906853-906860, RCIN 913024) illustrating the Months.
Although these drawings form part of what are probably four series, almost certainly representing designs for tapestries, they are clearly by the same hand, or possibly hands. It should, however, be noted that Nicholas Turner suggests that they may be connected with Francesco Salviati. They are possibly related to tapestries for the Fabbrica degli Arazzi in Florence, founded by Cosimo de' Medici. The paper, however, has a French grapes watermark, type of Briquet 13073-4, c. 1565-87. The drawing may be the work of a foreign artist active in France during the reign of Charles IX (1560-74).Provenance
First recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p.126: '16. Eight of the Twelve Months of the Year. The Triumph of Spring and Winter, and six of Military Engagements, design'd for Tapestry's')
