Marcantonio Bassetti (1586-1630)
The Triumph of Caesar

-
A drawing of a triumphal procession in the form of a frieze of massed figures moving to the left: some are mounted and others carry trophies and spoils; several are trampled underfoot. Caesar, in his chariot, appears at the extreme right. Though the sheet is not cut, the composition stops abruptly on the left and was probably continued on another similar sheet.
The handling of the drawing is much smoother than most other sheets by Bassetti, and this may well be a copy. What seems to be the original was with Stephen Ongpin Fine Art in 2021, a sheet 14.5 x 57.0 cm, with the subject given simply as A Triumphal Procession with Musicians Before a Chariot and Horsemen Behind. A second sheet en-suite with this was also with Ongpin, A Triumphal Procession with Prisoners and Horsemen Before a Chariot Bearing a Conqueror Crowned by Fame, 14.0 x 56.5 cm, though the compositions of the two are not continuous.Provenance
Probably from the collection of Consul Joseph Smith and bought by George III in 1762
