An allegory of Piety and Chastity c. 1633-9
-
A drawing of allegorical figures representing Science borne upon clouds, assisted by Piety and Chastity, overcoming lasciviousness in the form of Venus reclining on the left, and nymphs reclining at a fountain, lower centre. Silenus is attended by bacchic revellers, on the right. This is a copy, probably by Filippo Lauri, of part of the ceiling of the Salone in the Palazzo Barberini, Rome. Two copies of other parts of the ceiling, apparently by the same hand, are in the Ashmolean (nos. 829, 830), and another is in the Louvre (no. 560).
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani
