The Coronation of the Virgin
Pen and brown wash heightened with white | 28.4 x 23.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 906796

Giacinto Calandrucci (1646-1707)
The Coronation of the Virgin
-
A drawing of a group with the Virgin standing in the centre, flanked by God to the right, and Christ to the left; they both support the crown over her head. Winged putti hold up the clouds they are framed within. This is apparently a study for the circular ceiling painting in the first chapel to the left in SS. Domenico e Sisto in Rome by an unknown artist, although the style is consistent with that of Calandrucci. The composition has a similarity to a painting of the same subject in the Pallavicini collection, attributed to Lazzaro Baldi.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani: first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 128: among 'Eight small Drawings of a good Scholar of P: da Cortona. Six Drawings of Palma, misplac'd in this Collection. The last Drawing but one is of Mola. all the rest are of Inferior Professors')
