Giovanni Battista Gaulli (1639-1709)
An allegory
-
A drawing of two figures in a garden: on the right a winged girl, wearing a crown, kneels and holds open a casket. She stretches out her hand towards an old man who sits on the left holding a flower. There is an eagle between them, and a putto above points to the clipped trees. Inscribed on a scroll at the top: NEC DUAE NEC UNA, and below: Baciccio. This is probably an allegory on gardening.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani: first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 128: among 'Eight small Drawings of a good Scholar of P: da Cortona. Six Drawings of Palma, misplac'd in this Collection. The last Drawing but one is of Mola. all the rest are of Inferior Professors')
