The Martyrdom of St Bartholomew 1600-25
-
A drawing of the semi-naked figure of St. Bartholomew, tied to board, flanked by executioners who are flaying the skin from his forearms; a crowd surrounds them, and at upper right is the enthroned King Astyages overseeing the martyrdom; an architectural background beyond.
Popham (in P&W) noted that the drawing is characteristic of Palma’s late work, as seen in an album of drawings in the British Museum (1862,0809.1 etc).Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800, p. 128, ‘Moderna Schuola Romana’, Tom. III, among ‘Six Drawings of Palma, misplac'd in this Collection.’
