The Holy Family c. 1630-80
-
A drawing of the Holy Family seated amongst ruins; with the infant Baptist looking up at the Child, and a lamb on its hind legs, also stretching as if to gaze at him
This drawing is based on an engraving of 1617-18 by Michel Lasne after Rubens (British Museum: 1891,0414.763). The attrbution to Mola has been generally rejected, but no alternative has been suggested. The drawing is clearly Italian and probably Roman.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820
