St Theresa seated in a garden with a book; to the left, an angel rescues a soul from Purgatory while gesturing towards her. Probably an unused study for one of the small engravings in Alessio Maria della Passione’s Vita effigiata et essercitij affetivi della seraf. vergine S. Teresa di Giesù (1653), designed by Ferri, Sacchi and Baldi (see RCIN 906769-906774).
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 128: among 'Eight small drawings of a good Scholar of P: da Cortona')
