St Paul
Pen and brown wash, heightened with white, on brown paper | 30.0 x 19.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 906764

-
A drawing of Saint Paul, leaning against a column, with one hand on the hilt of a sword; behind him on the right, an angel appears holding an open book. According to a manuscript note in the Royal Library copy of Titi's Descrizione of 1763, Baglioni painted figures of St Peter and St Paul over the altarpiece in S Maria (near St Peter's). Baglione himself (Vite, Rome, 1642, p. 402) only speaks of the alarpiece which he painted, and which was presumably replaced by Caladrucci's in the restoration undertaken by Clement XI.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800, p.128 ('Moderna Schuola Romana / Tom. II.'): '30. Of Bacicia Galli, Lazzaro Baldi, Baglione &ca:'
