The Lamentation 1600 - 1700
Pen and ink with wash | 27.5 x 25.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 906760
-
A drawing of the body of Christ on a block of masonry, supported by Joseph of Arimathea, with the Virgin Mary, mourning, to the right. A basket and tongs at the lower left.
Popham tentatively attributed this drawing to Palma Giovane; the attribution was rejected by S.M. Rinaldi (orally), and the work is probably by a follower of Palma.Provenance
From an album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p.128, 'Moderna Schuola Romana / Tom. II', among '30. Of Bacicia Galli, Lazzaro Baldi, Baglione &ca:'; and thus probably acquired by George III in 1762 with the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani.
