A bishop seated at a table examines some papers (plans?) brought him by a bearded man c.1600
-
A drawing of a church interior with a bishop seated at a table, examining plans; other standing figures around him and to the left looking on. Presumably a design for a painting in a ceiling decoration.
Inscribed in pencil on the drawing ‘Arpino’, an attribution followed by Popham (in P&W). Dr Herwarth Röttgen (note on back of mount, c.1970) suggested 'circle of Muziano/Nebbia/Circignano'. More recently [where?], it has been related to a drawing by Avanzino Nucci (1552-1629) in the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. 11227 F). In 1595, Nucci moved from Rome to Naples to work with Cesari in the Certosa di San Martino.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800-20, p.128 ('Moderna Schuola Romana / Tom. II.'): '30. Of Bacicia Galli, Lazzaro Baldi, Baglione &ca:'
