Follower of Palma Giovane (1549-1628)
The Virgin and Child with Saints 1575 - 1625
-
A design for an arched altarpiece. The Virgin and Child at lower centre, with the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine – the Christ Child placing a ring on the finger of St Catherine of Alexandria. St Catherine of Siena and St Francis kneeling to the left, St Cecilia to the right with a portable organ at her feet; God the Father, the Holy Spirit and putti above.
The drawing was attributed by Popham (in P&W) to Palma Giovane, but the quality of drawing, particularly in the faces, is not high, and it is likely to be the work of a follower emulating his drawing style.
Provenance
From an album listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800, p.128, 'Moderna Schuola Romana / Tom. II', among '30. Of Bacicia Galli, Lazzaro Baldi, Baglione &ca:'; thus probably acquired in 1762 with the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani.
